Wisconsin State Unemployment Tax Relief Announced

Due to the large number of unemployment claims, and the forthcoming increased unemployment tax burden for employers, the Wisconsin Department of Workforce Development has potential relief for business owners.

The online application is due August 15, 2020.

As background, a Wisconsin business's unemployment tax rate is determined based on a business account balance. A business's quarterly tax contributions increase the balance, and past employee’s unemployment claims reduce the balance. The higher the balance, the lower the tax rate. As a result of the increased unemployment claims due to COVID-19, many businesses were poised for large Wisconsin unemployment tax increases.

However, if your employees were laid off due to the public health emergency declared by Executive Order 72 and filed initial unemployment claims for weeks after May 16, 2020, you may qualify for relief from your unemployment tax rate increases.
