Joe Henry is proud of the heritage of his business and the J. Henry & Sons story. Joe and his wife Liz took over the farm from Joe’s dad and they eventually started the bourbon business, J. Henry & Sons. The family business includes Joe and Liz Henry and their 2 sons, Joe Jr. and Jack.
The farm raises hybrid seed corn as well as corn, wheat, and rye for the bourbon production. Their bourbon is aged over five years and is sold through distributors or at their onsite tasting room.
SVA has been an advisor for this unique family-owned business for many years.
“We began with SVA almost 35 years ago, starting out primarily with tax work and transitioned over the last ten years to estate planning and transition planning,” says Joe. “What’s been great about working with SVA is they have a broad range of skills and people who are very knowledgeable.”
There are some similarities, but many more differences, in the rules and regulations for an agriculture and a spirits business. The taxation and legal rules are many and SVA has helped the business navigate and understand the implications of the regulations. Taxation can be complicated with multiple businesses and income streams and as the businesses grew, SVA was there to help. As an advisor, SVA has the expertise they need.
“During the unique challenges of COVID-19 and all the programs that became available, SVA kept us current and aware of all the options we had available to us,” continues Joe. “It was a challenging time for all businesses and SVA was always available to guide us.”
Joe continues, “Transitioning the businesses to our sons can be complicated. SVA helped us create a transition strategy to ensure the business keeps running smoothly. Based on our history with SVA, I would encourage anyone to look at SVA for their business needs.”
"SVA’s team has a broad range of skills that serve our needs for our agriculture and spirits business."
