What Nonprofit Organizations Should Be Thinking About Right Now

Over the past year, tax law changes have introduced new considerations for businesses and individuals. Nonprofit organizations are also feeling the ripple effects, particularly when it comes to fundraising, compliance, and strategic planning.

For nonprofit leaders, board members, and donors alike, this is less about reacting to a single piece of legislation and more about understanding how the environment around charitable giving is shifting, and what to do about it.

A Shift in How Donors Think About Giving

One of the most immediate areas of impact is charitable giving itself. Many taxpayers who previously received no tax benefit from their donations may now be eligible for some level of deduction, even if they don’t itemize.

While the mechanics will ultimately be handled on an individual’s tax return, the broader implication for nonprofits is clear: there is an opportunity and a need to better educate donors.

Individuals who may have felt disengaged from giving due to tax limitations could now be more inclined to contribute, especially if organizations proactively communicate what’s changed.

Expect Changes in Donor Behavior

At the same time, it’s important not to assume that donor behavior will remain consistent. In fact, many donors may rethink how and when they give. Strategies like “bunching” contributions or utilizing donor-advised funds can shift annual giving patterns, even among long-standing supporters.

A donor who has historically contributed the same amount each year may now alternate between larger and smaller gifts depending on their broader financial planning. For nonprofits, that introduces both a challenge and an opportunity—making it important to stay closely connected to key donors and understand their evolving approach.

Internal Policies Deserve a Closer Look

Beyond fundraising, there are also internal considerations that shouldn’t be overlooked. Compensation structures, particularly at the executive level, are receiving increased attention, and organizations should take the time to review how salaries, bonuses, and deferred compensation are structured and documented.

Even for smaller nonprofit organizations, fringe benefits such as parking, memberships, or other employee perks may carry tax implications that weren’t previously a concern. While not every organization will be directly affected in a significant way, understanding where exposure could exist is an important part of responsible management.

Governance and Documentation Matter More Than Ever

These changes also reinforce the importance of strong governance. Clear policies, thorough documentation, and appropriate board oversight are no longer just best practices—they are essential.

Whether it’s approving compensation, reviewing benefits, or documenting key decisions, nonprofit organizations should make sure their internal processes are aligned and well maintained. This is not just about compliance, but about creating transparency and consistency across the organization.

This Still Applies to Smaller Nonprofit Organizations

For smaller nonprofit organizations, it can be tempting to assume that many of these changes apply only to larger institutions. While certain provisions may be more relevant at scale, smaller organizations are not exempt from the broader shifts taking place.

In many cases, the most important focus areas remain straightforward: communicating clearly with donors, maintaining proper documentation, and seeking guidance when needed. Even modest adjustments in these areas can make a meaningful difference.

An Opportunity to Strengthen Donor Relationships

All of this creates opportunity on the fundraising side. Changes like these naturally open the door for more meaningful conversations with donors.

Reaching out to share updates, explain potential benefits, and better understand donor intentions can strengthen relationships in a way that goes beyond any single contribution. Done thoughtfully, this kind of engagement reinforces trust and positions the organization as both proactive and informed.

Where to Go from Here

Rather than viewing these changes as a one-time adjustment, nonprofit organizations should treat them as part of an ongoing shift in how they operate and engage with their stakeholders.

That starts with taking a closer look internally: reviewing compensation, benefits, and governance practices to ensure everything is aligned and well documented. It also means stepping outward, rethinking how you communicate with donors and being intentional about those conversations.

And as always, working closely with your advisors can help bring clarity to areas that may not be immediately obvious.
